Biobanks and Their Importance in the Clinical and Scientific Fields Related to Spanish Biomedical Research
نویسندگان
چکیده
The reality of biomedical research in Spain requires having an updated knowledge of the research reality and its ethical/legal framework. Research studies with human biological samples should be made with a sufficiently large number of samples to reflect the diversity of the human population, which meets the standard requirements to ensure optimum quality of the research results for further development. Furthermore, research with humans and obtaining and/or deriving human biological samples and clinical research studies information are subject to a number of legal requirements and restrictions. Biobanks and biobank networks are established as the optimal structures that favor the storage of large volumes of human biological samples based on criteria to ensure their optimum quality, harmonization and security, respecting at all times, the ethical and legal requirements guaranteeing the rights of citizens. © 2014 Elsevier España, S.L.U. متن کاملThe Significance of Biobanking in the Sustainability of Biomedical Research: A Review
Biobank, defined as a functional unit for facilitating and improving research by storing biospecimen and their accompanying data, is a key resource for advancement in life science. The history of biobanking goes back to the time of archiving pathology samples. Nowadays, biobanks have considerably improved and are classified into two categories: diseased-oriented and population-based biobanks. U...
متن کاملCost model for biobanks.
Current economic conditions and budget constraints in publicly funded biomedical research have brought about a renewed interest in analyzing the cost and economic viability of research infrastructures. However, there are no proposals for specific cost accounting models for these types of organizations in the international scientific literature. The aim of this paper is to present the basis of a...
متن کاملThe alliance between genetic biobanks and patient organisations: the experience of the telethon network of genetic biobanks
BACKGROUND Rare diseases (RDs) are often neglected because they affect a small percentage of the population (6-8 %), which makes research and development of new therapies challenging processes. Easy access to high-quality samples and associated clinical data is therefore a key prerequisite for biomedical research. In this context, Genetic Biobanks are critical to developing basic, translational...
متن کاملFuture of biobanks – bigger, longer, and more dimensional
Collections and repositories of biological samples that are used for research and medicinal purposes are referred to as biobanks. Biobanks focused on genetic epidemiology are currently dominating the field of biomedical research. This is clearly seen in the research priorities across Europe, where numerous biobanks have been developed and supported (1,2). Even the most superficial overview of t...
